Brandon and District
Youth & Community Project

History
Brandon Carrside Youth and Community Project, Brandon Community Partnership and Brandon Parish Council have joined forces to deliver a history project throughout the last year, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This has seen many offsite educational visits to museums and places of interest all relating to World War 1.
In 2016, a group of students went across to Normandy and visited the Somme battlefields. We had another group in 2018 researching the centenary of Passchendaele, along with intergenerational days out to Manchester Imperial War Museum and Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, and the Durham Light Infantry. The culmination of this history project has result in 6 elaborate commemorative benches being installed throughout the Parish – look out for them. Along with Poppy Crosses in various locations
Elmer Project
In 2019 we had the opportunity to take part in the Great North East Elmer Hunt and designed and commisioned an Elmer. Young people took part in art and design workshops, entered competitons and finally produced this spectacular piece of Art work.
The plan is to take Elmer to Primary Schools in our District and encourage reading using Elmer as a tool.
